Abstract

Herpes zoster is caused by reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus and shows distinctive vesicular lesions in distribution of skin area corresponding to certain dermatome. Herpes zoster is rare in children. In children under age 1, the age adjusted incidence rate of herpes zoster is only 74 per 100,000 persons annually, so there is limited number of studies about herpes zoster in healthy children due to its rare incidence rate. An increased risk for childhood herpes zoster has been reported in children who experienced varicella zoster virus infection in utero or in the first year of life. Pediatric herpes zoster has different clinical features in contrast to herpes zoster in elderly and some controversies still exist whether antiviral therapy is necessary for treatment of herpes zoster in immunocompetent children. We report a 16-month-old healthy infant with herpes zoster and review the risk factors, prognosis, and management.
